Giving Back: Colorado Egg Producers to Help Weld Food Bank and Hold Omelet Workshop

WHAT:
A recent study from Feeding America found 99 percent of participating food banks reported a significant surge in demand for emergency food assistance over the past year. In Colorado, 1 in 8 people struggle to put food on the table.

Weld Food Bank is a great community resource in northern Colorado. In 2008/2009, Weld Food Bank distributed 8.1 million pounds of food and currently distributes food to 115 non-profit agencies in Weld County. For every dollar received, Weld Food Bank distributes $10 worth of food. (Michael – if there any northern Colorado hunger stats we should use here, please let us know.)

To support Weld Food Bank this holiday season, the Colorado Egg Producers Association (CEP) – a membership organization made up of the state’s egg producers – is holding an omelet making workshop with Howard Helmer, who currently holds the Guinness Book of World Records title as the world's fastest omelet maker to teach attendees how to make the perfect omelet.

CEP will be presenting a donation check to the Weld Food Bank to support its new kitchen campaign. Once completed, the kitchen will be used to expand the Kids Cafe program with a goal of serving 31,000 meals in the first year. The Kids Cafe program serves children at risk of food insecurity with a complete hot meal in a setting where they also receive other supportive services, such as school tutoring and nutrition education. Each month, CEP also donates more than 40,000 eggs to the Weld Food Bank for a total of nearly a half million eggs in 2009.
