Colorado egg industry representatives among leading supporters of upcoming Ronald McDonald House Radiothon

Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) officials are encouraging folks to tune in to KOSI 101.1 FM on Thursday, Nov. 30, for the 10th annual Ronald McDonald House Radiothon, while CEP will also be matching financial donations made by callers during the day up to $30,000.

Among those working the phones during the event will be CEP Vice President Jerry Wilkins, who also serves as chair of the local Ronald McDonald House Radiothon. Additionally, Eggland's Best is among the major supporters of the event, and CEP representatives will also be on hand providing an omelet breakfast Thursday morning for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House and for volunteers.

Taking place from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. this Thursday, the "Light the House" radiothon and the dollars raised will help keep families of sick children close to the care and resources that they need while the child is hospitalized.

"It's an absolute honor to be associated with an event and an organization that has such an impact, like the Ronald McDonald House and its fundraising radiothon," said Wlikins, adding that local farms also regularly supply farm-fresh eggs throughout the year to families staying at Colorado's two Ronald McDonald Houses. "Our Colorado egg farmers are continuously looking for ways to give back to our communities, and having partners like the Ronald McDonald House makes our impact more widespread."

In addition to its involvement with the Ronald McDonald House, the Colorado Egg Producers member farms each year donate an estimated 1 million eggs to local food banks, along with other charitable endeavors. In addition to being a source of sustenance for those less fortunate, local food bank partners say these donations are greatly appreciated in that eggs have a place in such an abundance and diversity of foods, and also have a wealth of nutritional benefits, providing high-quality protein and essential vitamins and minerals.

World Egg Day set for Friday, Oct. 13

One of our favorite days of the year is just around the corner!

World Egg Day is celebrated every year on the second Friday in October and was first celebrated in 1996. Since then, people around the world have continued to celebrate eggs as an excellent, affordable source of high-quality protein and their vital role in feeding people around the world.

Every day, egg farmers across the globe join together in their commitment to provide high-quality eggs to help feed the world’s hungry.

Here at home, America’s egg farmers continue to balance their operations with firm commitments to the people they feed, the animals they care for and the environment we all share.

Pedal the Plains riders enjoy discussions, eggs-on-a-stick with CEP representatives

Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) representatives this past weekend took part in a whirlwind of activities out at the three-day Pedal the Plains.

CEP Executive Director Bill Scebbi, CEP Industry Relations Manager David Collie, and CEP Outreach Events Coordinator Terri Heine – along with her husband, Jerry – engaged in great conversations about agriculture and all things eggs with the 1,200 riders who participated in the event.

And thanks to Terri’s hard work in the kitchen, the CEP group also served up thousands of bite-sized egg treats, including CEP’s famous eggs-on-a-stick.

Pedal the Plains serves as an opportunity for cyclists to learn about farming, ranching and other rural industries, while also experiencing the unique culture, history and landscape of Eastern Plains communities.

And each year, CEP and a number of other ag organizations use the event to connect face-to-face with the many urban residents who participate in the bike ride.

This marked the sixth year that the Office of the Governor has partnered with the Denver Post Community Foundation to spotlight Colorado's rural communities on the three-day ride.

Kersey, Keenesburg and Brush were the three Colorado towns highlighted during this year’s 177-mile Pedal the Plains, which took place Sept. 15-17. Learn more here

In the whirlwind of a new school year, let the nutritious, versatile egg be of service

We’ve entered an exciting time of the year for many families, as the late summer and early fall is witness to kids storming back into the classrooms and into the many activities that accompany the school year.    

However, it can no doubt be an overwhelming time for parents, with the calendar rapidly filling up quickly on youth-focused time commitments, and while also trying to address the many aspects that can determine a child’s performance in school.

There’s not one single solution that can bring calm to this frenzy, but – as crazy as this might sound – the incredible, edible egg can certainly be of service.   

Parents and educators know that children perform better in class and in afterschool activities if they’re consuming nutritious and protein-rich meals. This vital component of a student’s life has even been the focus of policy at the highest levels of government in recent years, with school-meal programs at the center of much political discussion.

That being the case, the all-around health portfolio that eggs bring to the table make them an ideal food for our budding leaders, while the abundance and diversity of simple, quick recipes to which the egg lends itself can assist time-crunched parents.

CEP taking part in Tacolandia in Denver Aug. 20

Colorado Egg Producers representatives and others will be on hand at Tacolandia from 3-7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, in Civic Center Park in Denver, and encourage any and all food lovers to join them at the event.

Hickman’s Family Farms earns humane certification for cage-free eggs 

Hickman’s Family Farms -- an Arizona-based company with operations here in Colorado -- just earned humane certification for their cage-free eggs through the American Humane Certified program.

The country’s first national humane organization and the largest certifier of animal welfare in the world, American Humane certified Hickman’s Family Farms because it met the program’s rigorous standards, which include meeting some 200 science-based standards covering everything from adequate space to proper temperature, air quality and much more.

The farm will now voluntarily undergo rigorous, yearly audits by professional auditors to ensure the standards are being implemented.

CEP teaming up with Art Students League of Denver for 'Flat of Eggs' juried art exhibit

The Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) Association is thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with the Art Students League of Denver for its "Flat of Eggs" juried art exhibition.

This exhibit will be on display at the Art Student's League of Denver Gallery (200 Grant St. in Denver) through June 16.

Eggs finally — and accurately — being incorporated into the heart-health regimen

The symptoms, causes and affects of heart disease have no doubt been well-documented for years, but the same can't be said about factual information regarding one of heart health's biggest allies — eggs.

Those days seem to rightfully be coming to a close, though, as technological and medical advances have allowed experts to better understand how eggs have a place at the table of heart-healthy eating, after years spent on various nutritional no-no lists.

Research has shown eggs indeed have heart-protective qualities, including one recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition that found a daily egg intake led to a 12 percent reduced risk of stroke.

Other research found that eating one to three eggs per day resulted in increased levels of high-density lipoprotein, also known as the "good cholesterol," as well as an improved blood lipid profile.

In fact, since mounting evidence has shown dietary cholesterol doesn't negatively affect heart disease, recent recommendations from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and American Diabetes Association don't limit egg or cholesterol intake, which is a change compared with earlier guidance from these organizations.

Colorado egg farms donating hundreds of thousands of eggs to families in need for Easter

The local farms that make up the Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) Association will once again be helping out the Easter Bunny this year, as they're partnering with Feeding Colorado to donate hundreds of thousands of eggs to food banks, and ensuring those in need will have eggs in time for the holiday.
 
Members of the media are welcome and encouraged to attend an upcoming event, where the Food Bank of the Rockies’ mobile pantry will be on hand distributing these food donations, and will also be joined by the Easter Bunny and CEP’s mascot, Eggbert. Personnel and equipment from Commerce City Emergency Responders will be on hand as well, as will the Churn and Burn food truck, serving up breakfast burritos.
 
Additionally, this Easter Egg-Stravaganza will include prize giveaways, with each attendee heading home with an Easter egg-dyeing kit, and two lucky kids being randomly selected to win new bicycles.
 
This marks the 10th year in a row that CEP has partnered with Feeding Colorado to help those in need, and CEP is proud to again contribute to the efforts of Feeding Colorado and the Good Egg Project -- an initiative to end childhood hunger through the American Egg Board.
 
Morning Fresh Farms, NestFresh, Opal-Foods, Sparboe Farms and Hickman Family Farms are the local operations that have produced and donated the farm-fresh eggs to Feeding Colorado's food banks for Easter this year.
 
“The farms that make up the Colorado Egg Producers Association take seriously the fact that one in seven Coloradans don’t have enough food to meet their basic needs, and we strive to assist those families -- not only during Easter, but year-round," said CEP Executive Director Bill Scebbi.
 

Colorado Egg Producers play a part in Ag Day at the Capitol success

The “most popular event under the Golden Dome” was once again a success, as Gov. John Hickenlooper, state officials, the media and others took part in a well-deserved “thank you” to Colorado’s farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses during Agriculture Day at the Capitol on Wednesday.

And it was done largely with the help of Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) personnel. 

CEP Industry Relations Manager David Collie, who also owns and operates Collie Consulting LLC, took the lead among the 48 organizations that make up the Colorado Ag Council and organized the event, while CEP Executive Director Bill Scebbi, CEP Outreach Events Coordinator Terri Heine and CEP board member Terry Tormohlen were also on hand to help out.

With an estimated 900 people in attendance, the event was highlighted by a cook-off competition that featured the teaming up of local chefs, lawmakers and ag representatives, creating dishes with Colorado-grown foods.

The CEP team took second place overall in the 14-team cook-off competition, under the guidance of chefs Klaus Krebs and Travis Barday of Isle Casino and Hotel.

DENVER – August 2013 - Palisade peaches, Rocky Ford melons and Olathe sweet corn are just a few of the locally produced fruits and vegetables that have been tickling our taste buds this season. The Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) Association, a membership organization representing seven farms, wants to remind Coloradans that in addition to seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs are a food staple that shoppers can buy locally and enjoy year-round.

“Thinking about where food comes and buying locally is top-of-mind for many people today,” said Mike Surles, local egg farmer and CEP member. “This is the perfect time of year to celebrate the bounty of Colorado-produced food available at grocery stores, farmers’ markets and restaurants across the state. Colorado eggs are a wonderful example. When you purchase locally produced eggs, you are not only getting high-quality fresh products, you are also supporting Colorado's farmers, ranchers, processors and the state’s economy.”

DENVER – July 2013 – Colorado egg farmers and the Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) Association proudly celebrate the history of eggs this summer by taking a crack at that age-old question – “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”. While the answer is hotly debated, one thing is certain: eggs are a staple of the American diet. According to the American Egg Board, eggs are so popular that they’re used by 94 percent of households in the U.S. The American Egg Board recently found that 82 percent of parents agree that eggs are a more nutritious breakfast than cereal. Weighing in at 75 calories, eggs are a powerhouse of nutrition for their size and caloric content. Each egg has 13 essential nutrients – including the highest quality protein, choline, folate, iron and zinc. But did you know that this classic menu item has a long history with American agriculture?
